Stories to Watch: 5/21/13.
Not surprisingly, the tornado that leveled Moore, Oklahoma has been categorized as an EF5 — the worst possible.
In a case of amazingly good timing, a woman finds her dog safe and sound in the tornado debris — during an interview with a CBS reporter. It’s a heartwarming moment amid the heartbreaking horror.
Steve Benen takes a look at a statement by Oklahoma Sen. James Inhofe and concludes that he’s probably not as willing to take his own voters hostage to budget cuts as Tom Coburn is. Still, the possibility that Oklahomans have been duped into electing two such monsters is alarming.
And somewhat related to that “monster” link: I plan on adding Charlie Pierce to the superfeed. Not immediately, but when I get around to it. It’s a little bit of a process.
The NRA has a bit of an incoherence problem. After arguing that guns don’t kill people, movies kill people, the organization’s magazine publishes a listicle of the top ten “Coolest Gun Movies.”
An appeals court permanently blocks Arizona’s restrictive abortion law. Republicans pass these laws to invite court challenges, with the hope of overturning Roe v. Wade. Tt turned out to be an expensive waste of everyone’s time that these things always are. What they do manage to do is prove that GOP ideological claims are bullshit. Throwing money at doomed quests to overturn Roe isn’t fiscal conservatism and forcing women to give birth against their will for the short time the laws stand isn’t a triumph of liberty and small, limited government.
Immigration reform takes a step forward. The victory comes at a shameful cost, however.
Finally, check out Wolf Blitzer’s awkward TV moment.

Whenever anyone argues against marriage equality because of their religious views as a Christian I just want to hit them over the head repeatedly with a Bible whilst yelling
ADULTERY ISN’T ILLEGAL!!
LYING ISN’T ILLEGAL!!
DIVORCE ISN’T ILLEGAL!!
DISRESPECTING YOUR PARENTS ISN’T ILLEGAL!!
WORKING ON THE SABBATH ISN’T ILLEGAL!!
WORSHIPPING OTHER GODS ISN’T ILLEGAL!!
THE LAW DOES NOT FOLLOW THE BIBLE!!!!!
I’m a Christian and I approve this message.
Street harassment is not a compliment.
/passive aggressively reblogs 9001 fyfeminists posts
because i am a woman of color, and if anyone thinks for a second that that post’s OP wasn’t trying to decry racist and sexist apologism with their two senseless cents, i don’t understand why you’re still following me
mad that the OP’s apologism was called out for the bullshit that it is?
nothing makes me madder than seeing someone trying to reinforce ideas borne from centuries of oppression and claiming it isn’t blatant discrimination
i’m tired of seeing these fucking idiotic comments about what some ignorant fool thinks isn’t racist/sexist/ableist/etc and blames tumblr for blowing up over actually legit reasons
you can have your opinion, but your opinion is fucking stupid AND UTTERLY WRONG
When white liberal feminists label Beyoncé as anti-feminist, they are simply perpetuating the same racist partiarchy they’re supposed to be combating.
Beyoncé is at the center of her own media empire, no small feat for a woman of color in a racist, patriarchal society. Equally important, she embodies empowered sexuality. When she dances, the passion and commitment exudes in her every step. Her body is her own; she owns it and uses it as she sees fit. When she wears a unitard or “skimpy” outfit, something many dancers wear, mind you, she is showing off her impeccable body, her temple, her source of strength, and all that it can do. She is forcing those of us who are clinging to our puritanical notions of propriety to sit down, shut up, and watch raw, unbridled talent and skill. And yes, she is a feminist while doing it.
When white women get to decide who is “feminist enough,” particularly around women of color, they are perpetuating racism. They are policing the boundaries of who is acceptable and who isn’t. This is nothing more than a tool of racist patriarchy wrapped in feminist rhetoric. Yes, racist. It is decidedly racist the way white mainstream feminist organizations police women of color’s feminist credentials, the way white liberal feminists reduce Beyoncé to a gyrating slut with a potty mouth.
If white feminists want to be seen as inclusive, as truly revolutionary, as working to end alloppressive power systems, they must stop perpetuating those oppressions themselves. Exclusionary boundaries of who is an acceptable feminist and who isn’t does nothing for feminism except perpetuate racism, heterosexism, cissexism, classism, and other forms of bigotry and oppression. The incessant questioning of Beyoncé’s character and choices is simply a reflection of the latent bigotry that exists in feminist spaces.
Until white feminists stop policing women of color’s feminist credentials, they are doomed to repeat the same racist patriarchy we are supposed to be combating.
love this! recommend reading the whole thing at the source.
Lorena Borjas: Why she kicks ass
- She is a Mexican trans activist, and health educator for the transgender community.
- She started the Lorena Borjas Community Fund; which is a volunteer-run project created to institutionalize the support that Lorena has provided for years. The LBCF Fund supports low-income gay, bisexual, lesbian, transgender, queer, questioning, intersex, and gender non-conforming immigrants avoid the collateral consequences associated with criminal convictions, jail time and court appearances.
- She works with the AIDS Center of Queens County, and with Trans Latinas, a collective of transsexual Latinas that strive to create more tolerance within the Latino community and among the authorities.
She sounds badass!

Judge Roach has placed a “morality clause” in Compton’s divorce papers, which forbids Compton from having anyone she is not related to “by blood or marriage” in her home past 9:00 p.m. if the children are present. Same sex marriage is illegal in Texas, so by law, Compton cannot live with Price if she wishes to retain custody of her children.
This is ridiculous. What happened to small government? So she can’t have a party on her birthday or NEW YEARS EVE? WTFFFF What bullshit.
Argentina JUST PASSED a groundbreaking gender identity bill!!!
From now on, people will be able to change the name and gender on their ID without needing psychiatric permission or any body modifications. Furthermore, anyone who does want hormones or surgery will be able to access them for free through the public and private health system.
It was passed unanimously today by the Senate
Argentina is just getting more awesome by the year. Countries that aren’t Argentina need to take note.
sigh. y so behind, US?
edit: Wanted to clarify I am not reblogging this as a recent news item since I know it’s old. I meant this post to show how behind the US is in terms of trans* rights.
Ashley Del Valle is a transgender woman from New York who was arrested in Georgia for indecent exposure after she allegedly showed her breasts, but then was housed in an all-male jail.
You arrest her because her top is too sheer and shows her nipples, something that is only a crime for women.
And then you jail her as a man.
